Minimally invasive spine surgery is a surgical technique. Your surgeon makes a single long incision (cut) through your skin in a traditional open surgery approach. A large amount of muscle and surrounding soft tissue is spread or pulled out of the way or removed from the bone to help your surgeon see the surgical site clearly. This can lead to additional muscle damage and pain following surgery. Your surgeon will make one or more small incisions (about 12 inches each) through your skin during minimally invasive surgery. A small metal tube, known as an endoscope, is inserted through the incision, allowing the surgeon to work in a smaller operative field. Working through smaller incisions harms muscles and soft tissues far less than a single long incision.
