Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty or total knee replacement, is a surgical procedure used to resurface an arthritis-damaged knee. Metal and plastic components, as well as the kneecap, are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint. Someone with severe arthritis or a severe knee injury may benefit from this surgery. The knee joint can be affected by several types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease primarily affecting middle-aged and older adults, can result in the breakdown of joint cartilage and adjacent bone in the knees. Rheumatoid arthritis, which causes synovial membrane inflammation and excess synovial fluid, can cause pain and stiffness. Traumatic arthritis, or arthritis caused by an injury, can harm the cartilage. Traumatic arthritis, or arthritis caused by an injury, can damage the cartilage in the knee. The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface damaged parts of the knee joint and relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled with other treatments.
